Archie Wheeler selected in NSW Country Under 18s side

Rising star Archie Wheeler has been officially named in the 2025 NSW Country Under 18s Rugby League representative team, a significant milestone in the young players rugby league career.

Wheeler’s selection comes off the back of a standout Laurie Daley Cup campaign, where his explosive pace, rock-solid defence, and game-changing instincts have caught the eye of selectors and fans alike. The 18-year-old centre has consistently impressed with his on-field maturity, proving himself a critical asset in both attack and defence.

NSW Country Rugby League selectors praised Wheeler’s consistency and work ethic, highlighting his leadership potential and adaptability across the backline as key factors in his inclusion. Known for his speed and his sharp reading of the game, Wheeler is expected to play a pivotal role in the squad’s upcoming fixtures.

A junior product of the Thirroul system, Wheeler has risen through the ranks with grit and humility. Over the past two seasons, he’s consistently been one of the Illawarra competition’s most reliable and dangerous players, often turning games with individual brilliance or last-line defensive efforts.

Butchers head coach Jarrod Costello said Wheeler’s selection was well deserved: “Archie’s a special talent, but more than that, he’s a competitor. He trains hard, leads by example, and has a real love for the game. We’re absolutely stoked to see him get this opportunity at rep level.”

The NSW Country squad will face City later this month in one of the most anticipated clashes on the representative calendar. The game is not only a showcase of regional talent but a key fixture in the representative calendar and a proven pathway for players like Wheeler to push for higher honours, including potential NRL consideration.

Wheeler’s inclusion continues the proud tradition of Thirroul players stepping onto the representative stage and reflects the strength of the Butchers’ development system and club culture.

Everyone at the Thirroul Butchers congratulates Archie as he takes the next big step in what promises to be a standout career.
