The Thirroul Butchers began their 2025 Illawarra Rugby League campaign with a challenging 30–12 defeat against De La Salle at Captain Cook Oval on Saturday, 26 April. Despite a spirited effort, the Butchers were unable to overcome the reigning minor premiers in this ANZAC Round 1 clash
De La Salle capitalised on their home advantage, establishing a commanding 18–0 lead by half-time. The Butchers managed to cross the try line twice in the second half, showcasing moments of attacking prowess, but struggled to contain De La Salle’s offensive pressure throughout the match. This encounter marked a rematch of the 2024 preliminary final, where Thirroul had previously triumphed 29–4 to secure a spot in the grand final. However, De La Salle demonstrated their determination, reversing the outcome of their latest meeting.
While the result was not in Thirroul’s favour, the team exhibited glimpses of their potential in the second half. The Butchers will aim to regroup as they prepare for their next fixture against Wests in round 2
Our Under-18s team secured a hard-fought 16–14 victory over De La Salle in the earlier game of the Southern Sydney Rugby League U18s Gold competition. The match was closely contested, with both teams scoring three tries each. Thirroul’s edge came from successfully converting two of their tries, while De La Salle managed only one conversion.
